Traces of What We Did

Bahasa Inggris SMP Kelas 8 · Bab 4: Pages From The Past

Every action we take leaves a trace — a mark of something that has already happened. In this part, you will explore how to express those actions through words. By learning how to describe what you did, saw, or felt, you will discover how language helps us capture moments that are now memories.

Mission 1. What Did You Do Yesterday?

Think about your activities yesterday. Write them in a list of sentences using the simple past tense. You may also ask your friend what they did yesterday and add their answers to your list. Use different action verbs to make your sentences more interesting.

Mission 2. Unlocking the Past

In this mission, you'll practice identifying sentences in the simple past tense. Look at the sentences below and write "Correct" or "Incorrect" next to each sentence. If it's incorrect, write what the correct form should be. This will help you recognize when the simple past tense is used properly.

Mission 3. Talk Through Time

In this mission, you will work in pairs. Think about what you did yesterday or last weekend. Each of you will take turns asking and answering questions about your past events. Be sure to use sequence words (e.g., First, Then, After that, Finally) to organize your responses. Example dialogue: Azka: What did you do yesterday? Andi: First, I woke up at 7 a.m. then I had breakfast and went to school. After that, I studied for my math test. Finally, I watched a movie with my family. Azka: That sounds like a busy day! You woke up early and studied hard.

Knowledge Corner — Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened at a specific time in the past. It is one of the most important tenses for telling stories, sharing experiences, and describing past events. Regular verbs: form the past tense by adding -ed to the base form of the verb. Example: play → played Irregular verbs: do not follow a regular pattern. Their past forms must be memorized because they change in different ways. Example: go → went Affirmative, Negative, and Interrogative Sentences Affirmative: Subject + past verb + object/complement — "I visited my grandparents yesterday." Negative: Subject + did not + base verb + object/complement — "I did not visit my grandparents yesterday." Interrogative: Did + subject + base verb + object/complement? — "Did you visit your grandparents yesterday?" Time Expressions for the Past: help indicate when an action happened. Example: "She went to school yesterday." Talking about Past Experiences: To describe past events, combine verbs in the past tense with time expressions and sequence words (first, then, after that, finally) to make your story organized and easy to follow. Example: "First, I woke up early. Then, I ate breakfast. After that, I went to the park. Finally, I played with my friends."

Mission 4. Regular and Irregular Verbs

In this mission, you will practice recognizing regular and irregular verbs. You will be given a list of verbs in their base form. Your task is to sort them into two categories: Regular Verbs (verbs that end in -ed) and Irregular Verbs (verbs that change completely in the past form). After categorizing them, use each verb in a sentence to describe something you did in the past.

Use time expressions like yesterday, last week, in the morning, etc., to make your sentences more interesting. Example: Verb: talk Sentence: I talked to my friend about the movie we watched yesterday Verb: eat Sentence: I ate pizza for dinner last night
