When talking about our hobbies and interests, we often repeat the same words. That's where object pronouns come in! They make our conversations more natural and help us avoid repetition. In this sub-chapter, we'll learn how to use me, you, him, her, it, us, and them to keep conversations flowing smoothly.
Mission 1. Share What You Like!
Write a short letter to your friend. Tell them about someone or something you like—it can be a singer, a football player, a hobby, a movie, or anything you enjoy. Be sure to write in full sentences and explain why you like the person or thing. Dear Aira, How are you? I hope you're doing well. I wanted to write and tell you about something that I really like right now. Lately, I've been so interested in a K-pop group called BlackPink. I discovered them a few months ago, and now I listen to them almost every day. Their songs are so catchy and meaningful. I also follow them on social media to see their updates and behind-the-scenes videos. My favorite member is Jennie. She has a great voice, and I really admire her. When I feel tired or sad, listening to her sing makes me feel better. Sometimes I even play their music while doing homework—it helps me stay focused. Besides music, I've also been spending more time on drawing. I have a new sketchbook, and I use it to draw their group logo and portraits. It's fun and relaxing. I hope I can show it to you when we meet again! Let's talk more soon. Please write back and tell me about your favorite artist or hobby too. I really miss hanging out with you. Your friend, Kayla Write your letter here: Dear…. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
An object pronoun is a word that replaces a noun and receives the action in a sentence. It usually comes after a verb or a preposition. Object pronouns help us avoid repeating the same nouns again and again. Subject Pronouns → Object Pronouns → Example Sentence: I → Me → My friend calls me every day. You → You → I will help you with your homework. He → Him → We saw him at the park. She → Her → I met her at the library. It → It → I like this book. I will read it again. We → Us → Our teacher gave us a fun activity. They → Them → We invited them to the party. How Object Pronouns Are Used in Sentences: Object pronouns are used as the object of the verb, which means they receive the action of the verb. Without Object Pronoun: "I saw Sarah." — In this sentence, Sarah is the object of the verb "saw." With Object Pronoun: "I saw her." — In this sentence, her is the object pronoun replacing "Sarah."
Mission 2. Object Pronoun Hunt!
Re-read the letter you wrote in previous mission (Mission 1). Underline or highlight all the object pronouns you can find. Then, list them in your notebook and write who or what each one refers to. Example: Dear Aira, How are you? Your friend, Kayla Now highlight or underline your letter in the previous mission! Your letter: Dear…. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Mission 3. Fill It In: The Missing Pieces!
Work in pairs. Read each sentence and fill in the blank with the correct object pronoun from the box. Use the clues in each sentence to help you decide which pronoun fits best. After you complete all the sentences, take turns reading them aloud to each other for pronunciation and fluency practice. Word Box: me, you, him, her, it, us, them Sentences: 1. Mission 4. Talk and Replace!
Work in pairs. Take turns talking about your daily routines or experiences (e.g., people you met, things you saw or used). Every time your partner mentions a noun (a person, animal, or thing), respond by replacing it with the correct object pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, them). Then, your partner will confirm the sentence using the object pronoun. Example Conversation: Rafi: Yesterday, I met my cousin at the library. Nina: Oh, did you talk to him? Rafi: Yes, I helped him find a science book. Rafi: After that, we saw our English teacher near the entrance. Nina: Really? Did she see you? Rafi: Yes! She smiled at us and waved. Rafi: Then we borrowed a comic book. I gave the book to my cousin. Nina: Was it funny? Did you like it? Rafi: Yes, I loved it. We read it together at the park. Rafi: I also brought some snacks and shared them with my classmates. Nina: That was nice of you. I'm sure they appreciated them. Rafi: Yes, they thanked me after school.
Mission 5. Pronoun Switch-Up!
Read each sentence carefully. Identify the noun that should be replaced with an object pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, them). Then rewrite the sentence using the correct object pronoun. The teacher called my friends after class. ………………………………………………….. 4. She gave the pencil to me. ………………………………………………….. 5. We invited Lina and Riko to the show. ………………………………………………….. 6. Story: Dina baked a chocolate cake and brought the cake to school. At lunch, Dina offered the cake to Farhan and Naila. Farhan was very happy and thanked Dina. Naila smiled and said she would eat the cake after class. Later, the teacher, Miss Lani, saw the cake and asked Dina about it. Dina gave a piece to Miss Lani. Then, Dina saw her friends near the canteen and ran to call her friends. She told her friends about the cake, and they followed Dina to get a piece. Now rewrite the story by replacing the repeated names or objects with correct object pronouns. Here's how it starts: Rewritten (first part): Dina baked a chocolate cake and brought it to school. At lunch, Dina offered it to them. He was very happy and thanked her…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………... ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
