In this subchapter, you will learn how to identify different places in a town, such as parks, shops, schools, and libraries. You will also practice using "there is" and "there are" to describe these places clearly and accurately.
Mission 1. Name the Place!
Look at each picture carefully and think about the place it shows. Write the correct name of the place under each picture. Make sure to check your spelling and try to remember what the place is used for.

You are a town detective! Read each clue carefully and think about which place it describes. Then, write the name of the place in English. We use there's and there are to say that something exists in a place. There's = there is (singular) → for one place or thing. There are (plural) → for more than one place or thing. Examples: There's a school in my town. There are three supermarkets near my house. There's a park next to the hospital. We use prepositions to describe where one place is in relation to another. Next to → very close, side by side. Example: The cinema is next to the supermarket. In front of → before, facing. Example: The bus station is in front of the park. Behind → at the back. Example: The library is behind the school. Between → in the middle of two places. Example: The mosque is between the school and the hospital. Across from / Opposite → on the other side of the road. Example: The bank is across from the post office.
Mission 3. Town Identification
Read the text carefully and answer the questions below. Use complete sentences, there's, there are, and the correct prepositions of place when necessary. Pay attention to the details in the text to improve your understanding of describing locations in a town. Maple Town Welcome to Maple Town! Maple Town is a small but lively town with many interesting places for both residents and visitors. At the heart of the town, there's a large park where children play, families have picnics, and people walk their dogs. Behind the park, there is a modern library where students and adults can borrow books, use computers, and attend workshops. Next to the library, there are two cozy cafés where friends usually meet in the afternoon for coffee and snacks. On the main street, there's a hospital to take care of sick people, and across from it, there's a post office where people can send letters and packages. Between the supermarket and the cinema, there's a bank that offers friendly service to residents. Maple Town also has a school located next to a playground, which makes it easy for children to play during breaks. Near the town center, there's a small museum that showcases the history of Maple Town, and next to it, there's a florist shop that sells beautiful flowers. Mission 4. Map Reader
Look at the town map below, work in pairs and take turns describing a place using there's or there are along with prepositions of place. Your partner must try to identify the place based on your description. Then, write 3–5 sentences describing different places on your own. Use a mix of singular and plural places and include prepositions to make your descriptions more interesting and detailed.
Mission 5. Be a Town Reporter
Imagine you are a town reporter writing a short report of 5–8 sentences about your town. Mention at least six places using there's for singular and there are for plural, and include prepositions of place to make your descriptions clear. Finally, read your report aloud to a partner or record yourself. Example: "My town is a small but lively place. There's a library next to the school where students like to read books. There's a park behind the supermarket where families often have picnics. There are two cinemas across from the main street, showing the latest movies. There's a hospital between the bank and the post office. There's a café in front of the museum where tourists like to rest. There are several shops near the park where people buy snacks and drinks."
