- Expression to Ask and State an Ability
- In English, we use the word "can" to talk about ability — what someone is able or not able to do. This includes asking someone about their ability and stating your own ability or inability.
- Asking about ability: "Can you…?" — Example: "Can you swim?" / "Can you speak English and French?"
- Expressions to State Ability: I can… / I am able to… / I know how to… — "Can" is more casual, "Be able to" is more formal, "Know how to" emphasizes skill.
- Expressions to State Inability: I can't… / I am not able to… / I don't know how to… Use polite phrases if refusing: "I'm sorry, I can't help today."
- Combining Ability and Inability in Conversations: "I can perform solo, but I can't join the group performance."
- Expression of Willingness
- When we want to know if someone wants to do something, we use expressions to ask about willingness: "Do you want to…?" / "Would you like to…?" / "Are you willing to…?"
- Expressions of willingness: "Yes, I'd love to." / "Sure, I'm happy to." / "Of course, I can help."
- Expressions of refusal: "No, I'm refuse." / "Sorry, I'd rather not." / "I don't think I can."
