Sharing Your Choices!

Bahasa Inggris SMP Kelas 8 · Bab 1: Express Yourself: Ability and Willingness

Being able to do something is one thing, but showing your willingness adds politeness and clarity to your conversations. In this subchapter, you will practice asking and expressing willingness or unwillingness, and act out dialogues that help you communicate your choices confidently and politely.

Mission 1. Question Detective

You are going to be a "Question Detective"! Your mission is to find out what people around you are willing to do. Write 5 questions asking about willingness, using expressions like "Will you…?", "Would you like to…?", or "Do you want to…?". Then, ask your family members, friends, or classmates and record their answers. After completing all 5 questions. Example Question: "Will you help me with my homework?" or "Would you like to play a game with me?". Write a short paragraph summarizing your findings. Example: "Most of my friends want to play football, but only a few want to help me clean the classroom.".

Mission 2. Willingness Survey

Ask 3–5 friends or family members: "Will you…?" for each activity. If they say yes, write their answer in the corresponding column. At the end, write 1–2 sentences about what most people were willing to do and what most people were not willing to do.

Mission 3. Mini Interview

Work in pair. Ask your partner about 5–6 tasks using "Can you…?" (ability) and "Would you like to…?" (willingness). Write your partner's answers in full sentences. Use "can/can't" for abilities and "would like/wouldn't like" for willingness. After finishing the interview, summarize your partner's abilities and willingness in a short paragraph. Example and guided activity — Interview board (Name: Rani, Interviewer: Arif):

ActivityCan/cannotWould like/wouldn't like

Reporter (Arif): "Rani can swim and she would like to swim. She can draw, but she wouldn't like to draw. She can help a friend and she would like to help. She can clean the room, but she wouldn't like to clean it. She cannot play the guitar and she wouldn't like to play it. Finally, she can cook a meal and she would like to cook."

Mission 4. Conversation Shuffle

Below is a conversation between Dita and Raka about what they can do and what they would like to do. The lines are mixed up. Your task is to rearrange them into a logical order that makes sense as a full conversation. After arranging, read it aloud with a partner to practice speaking naturally.

Knowledge Corner — Willingness

When we want to know if someone wants to do something, we use expressions to ask about willingness. These expressions are polite and show respect for the other person's choice. Some common expressions: "Do you want to…?" / "Would you like to…?" / "Are you willing to…?" Example: "Do you want to join the school trip?" / "Would you like to help me with the project?" Expressions of willingness: "Yes, I'd love to." / "Sure, I'm happy to." / "Of course, I can help." Expressions of refusal: "No, I'm refuse." / "Sorry, I'd rather not." / "I don't think I can." Examples: Question: "Would you like to join the school play?" Answer (willing): "Yes, I'd love to participate!" Answer (unwilling): "Sorry, I'd rather not join this time."

Do You Know? — The Cost of Too Many Choices

The average person makes around 35,000 choices every single day! This includes everything from deciding what to eat, when to wake up, and which route to take to work. Interestingly, research shows that having too many choices can lead to decision fatigue, where making decisions becomes overwhelming and more difficult. This is why we sometimes opt for the easiest choice, like choosing the same meal every day or sticking to a routine.
