This subchapter focuses on how to bring your comparisons to life by applying comparative and superlative adjectives in both spoken and written communication. You will learn how to use these adjectives effectively to express ideas, experiences, and observations in clear and organized ways.
Mission 1. Read and Answer!
Read the passage below carefully. Then, answer the following questions in complete sentences.
Exploring Indonesia's Wonderful Cities
Indonesia is a country filled with beautiful cities, each offering something special. Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bandung are among the most well-known. Jakarta is much busier than Yogyakarta. Its roads are more crowded, the buildings are taller, and life there feels faster. Jakarta is the capital city, and it is one of the most developed and most expensive places to live in Indonesia. People come from all over the country to find better opportunities, but the traffic can be worse than in any other city. Yogyakarta, on the other hand, is smaller, calmer, and friendlier. It is known for its deep culture and history. The people are more polite, and the environment feels more relaxed. Many students believe Yogyakarta is the best city to study because it is cheaper and safer than Jakarta. It is also famous for its traditional arts, food, and kindness of the locals, making it one of the most welcoming cities in Indonesia. If you want to enjoy nature, Bandung might be the perfect destination. The weather there is cooler than Jakarta's and the air is cleaner. Bandung is also one of the most creative cities, filled with art cafés, boutiques, and mountain views. Many tourists say Bandung is the most comfortable city to relax in because of its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Each city has something unique: Jakarta is busier, Yogyakarta is more cultural, and Bandung is the most relaxing of all. Questions: 1. What makes Jakarta different from Yogyakarta? 2. How is life in Yogyakarta described in the text? 3. Why do some students prefer to study in Yogyakarta? 4. What makes Bandung special compared to the other cities? 5. According to the text, which city is the most relaxing, and why?
Mission 2. Find and Highlight
Underline or highlight all the comparative and superlative adjectives you can find in the passage in previous mission. Then, list five of each in the table below.
| Comparative Adjective | Superlative Adjective |
|---|---|
Mission 3. My City, My Words
Think about your hometown and another place you have visited or know well. Write a short paragraph (6–8 sentences) comparing these two places. Use at least three comparative and two superlative adjectives to describe their differences and similarities. You can talk about the people, the environment, the weather, or the lifestyle. My hometown, Malang, is smaller than Surabaya, but it is more peaceful. The weather in Malang is cooler, and the air feels fresher. Surabaya, on the other hand, is busier and more crowded, but it has more modern buildings. Among all the cities I've been to, Malang is the most comfortable to live in because it is cleaner and greener than the others.
Mission 4. Talk and Compare
Work in pairs or small groups. Each person will choose two or three things (for example, two foods, two places, two people, or two hobbies) and describe them to their partner using comparative and superlative adjectives. After that, discuss which one is better or more interesting and explain your reason. 1. Which one is better, and why? 2. Which one is more useful in daily life? 3. Which one is the most important for you? 4. Which one is more fun to do or visit? 5. Which one is the most unforgettable experience? Example: Andi: I think football is more exciting than basketball. Budi: I agree, but basketball is the most popular sport in our school. Andi: Yes, but football is easier to play anywhere.
Mission 5. Compare to Convince
Think about two things you like or use often (for example: two social media platforms, two hobbies, two kinds of food, or two types of transportation). Write a short paragraph (6–8 sentences) explaining which one is better and why. Use at least three comparative and two superlative adjectives in your writing. Example: I think bicycles are better than motorcycles. Bicycles are cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Riding a bicycle is also healthier because it gives you more exercise. Motorcycles are faster, but they are more dangerous and expensive. For me, bicycles are the most enjoyable way to travel because they keep you active and relaxed at the same time.
Mission 6. The Animal Showdown!
Look at the clues about each animal below. Use the information to write sentences comparing them using comparative and superlative adjectives. You can compare their size, weight, speed, or strength. Try to make at least five sentences that show the differences and similarities among them.
| Animal | Average Weight | Height | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
is / rabbit / faster / the / than / bear. The rabbit is faster than the bear. 1. elephant / the / heaviest / is / all / of …………………………………………………………………………………………. 2. lion / faster / is / the / tiger / than …………………………………………………………………………………………. 3. taller / giraffe / the / animal / is / land / on / every / than / other …………………………………………………………………………………………. 4. cheetah / fastest / is / animal / the / world / in / the …………………………………………………………………………………………. 5. slower / turtle / rabbit / than / is / the …………………………………………………………………………………………. 6. weighs / the / tiger / bear / more / the / than …………………………………………………………………………………………. 7. cheetah / the / lion / more / is / than / powerful / in / running …………………………………………………………………………………………. 8. giraffe / heavier / is / rabbit / the / much / than ………………………………………………………………………………………….
Mission 7. Statement Check!
Read the text carefully. After reading, check each statement below. Write True (T) if the statement matches the text or False (F) if it doesn't. Be careful — some sentences may look correct but are not!
A Trip to Remember
Last holiday, my classmates and I went on a camping trip in the mountains. It was one of the most unforgettable experiences I have ever had. The trip started early in the morning when we took a bus from school. The weather was cooler than in the city, and the fresh mountain air made everyone feel excited. When we arrived, we set up our tents near a small river. It was harder than we thought because the ground was rocky, but working together made it fun. After setting up, we cooked lunch together. Rina was the most skillful at cooking; her fried rice was delicious! In the afternoon, we went hiking up a nearby hill. The path was steeper than expected, but when we reached the top, the view was absolutely amazing. We could see the entire valley below us. it was like a green ocean surrounded by misty clouds. That night, we built a campfire and sang songs under the stars. It was the coldest night I had ever felt, but it was also the warmest memory because everyone laughed and shared stories. Before going to sleep, our teacher reminded us to clean up the area to keep the environment safe. The next morning, we took a group photo before heading home. We were all tired, but we agreed that this trip was the best adventure we'd ever had. Statement check:
