Mission 3. Inside the Story

Read the story below carefully. Then, answer the questions that follow to test your understanding and explore how each part of a story connects to its message.

The Stonecutter (A Japanese Folktale)

Once upon a time, there was a poor stonecutter who worked hard every day cutting rocks from the mountain. He was strong and honest, but he was never satisfied with his life. One day, while delivering stones to a rich man's house, he saw beautiful furniture, fine clothes, and servants everywhere. He sighed and said, "How I wish I could be rich and live like that man." To his surprise, a spirit living in the mountain heard his wish. The next morning, the stonecutter woke up in a large house filled with gold and silk. He was no longer poor. For a few days, he felt happy and proud. But one afternoon, he looked out the window and saw a powerful prince passing by in a grand procession. Everyone bowed before the prince, even the rich men. The stonecutter thought, "The prince is greater than any rich man. I want to be a prince." The mountain spirit heard again and granted his wish. The stonecutter became a prince, dressed in beautiful robes, and everyone bowed to him. But as he stood in the sun during a parade, he started to feel hot. "The sun is more powerful than I am," he complained. "I want to be the sun!" Instantly, he became the sun, shining over the land, burning fields and drying rivers. But soon, a dark cloud covered him, blocking his light. "The cloud is stronger than me," he said. "I want to be a cloud!" He became a cloud and poured rain across the earth. Rivers overflowed, and villages flooded. But then, the wind blew and pushed him across the sky. "The wind is stronger than I am," said the cloud. "I want to be the wind." And so he became the wind, blowing roofs off houses and bending trees. But one day, he tried to move a giant rock and couldn't. No matter how hard he blew, the rock stayed still. "That rock is stronger than I am," he whispered. "I want to be a rock." The spirit granted his wish again, and he became a huge rock, strong and unmoving. But one morning, he felt something sharp cutting into his side, it was a stonecutter, chipping away pieces of him. "That man is stronger than I am," said the rock sadly. "I want to be… a stonecutter again." And so, for the final time, his wish was granted. He returned to his old form poor but happy. From that day on, he worked with peace in his heart, grateful for who he was. Answer the questions below: 1. Who is the main character in the story, and what is his job? 2. What makes the stonecutter unhappy with his life in the beginning? 3. List the different things the stonecutter wished to become. 4. What lesson does he learn at the end of the story? 5. How does the story show the idea of never being satisfied? 6. Identify the orientation, complication, and resolution of the story. 7. If you were the stonecutter, what would you do differently, and why?

Knowledge Corner — Folktales

A folktale is a narrative story that has been told from one generation to another for many years. Before people had books or the internet, stories were shared by speaking, usually by parents or grandparents. Folktales were made not only to entertain but also to teach lessons about good behavior and values. Even though folktales were made long ago, their messages still matter today. They remind us to be honest, brave, helpful, and kind — values that are needed everywhere, at any time. When we read folktales, we are not only learning English, but also learning wisdom for life. Each country has its own folktales. For example: Timun Mas from Indonesia The Rabbit and the Tortoise from India The Lion and the Mouse from Africa Even though the stories are different, they all share similar moral values: kindness, honesty, courage, and respect. Every folktale has a clear structure. Understanding this structure helps us know how stories work.
