Numbers in Dates

Bahasa Inggris SMP Kelas 7 · Bab 1: Greeting the World: Your Guide to Making Lasting First Impressions

Every day, we navigate through time, whether it's marking special events or planning our schedules. Cardinal and ordinal numbers are the tools we use to express dates and sequence.

Mission 1. Numbering the Sequence

Write down the corresponding ordinal number for each cardinal number, then practice saying both aloud.

Mission 2–4. Memorable Dates, Phone Numbers & Numbers in Everyday Life

Write down at least five significant dates in your life (birthday, holidays, achievements) and reflect on why they matter. Practice writing and reading phone numbers in digit and word forms (e.g., 0812 3456 789 → Eight hundred twelve, three thousand four hundred fifty-six, seven hundred eighty-nine). Then look around your classroom or home and find 10 objects associated with numbers (e.g., a clock showing 3:00 → Number: 3; a book page numbered 25 → Number: 25).

Mission 5. Number Operations Practice

Now that you've written down the numbers and their written forms from your scavenger hunt, let's practice performing some simple arithmetic operations. For each operation, write the answer in words (not numbers), for example: 3 + 25 = Thirty-eight 25 - 3 = Twenty-two Solve the following problems using the numbers you wrote down, and write the answers in word form: a. What is 3 + 25? ___________________________ b. What is 25 - 3? ___________________________ c. What is 10 + 15? _________________________ d. What is 50 - 7? ___________________________ e. What is 20 x 3? __________________________ f. What is 36 ÷ 4? __________________________

Knowledge Corner — Cardinal vs. Ordinal Numbers

Cardinal numbers are used to count things and show how many of something there are (One, Two, Three, Ten, Hundred). Example: "There are five books on the shelf." Ordinal numbers tell us the position or order of something in a sequence (First, Second, Third, Tenth, Hundredth). Example: "My birthday is on the 1st of May." Cardinal numbers tell us "how many"; ordinal numbers tell us "which position." For counting objects, use cardinal numbers ("There are 5 people in the group"). For dates, use ordinal numbers for the day of the month ("The 5th of June").

Mission 6. Ordinal Number Practice

In the previous activity, you wrote down at least five memorable dates that have shaped your life. Now, transform each of these dates into ordinal numbers. For example, if your birthday is on the 5th of September, you will write "5th of September" instead of just "September 5."

Mission 7. Transform the Numbers

Below are some dates in cardinal number form (e.g., 1 April, 2 April). You will also find a list of events or milestones. Your task is to match each date with the correct event using ordinal numbers. You can discuss it with your friends or using internet to find the events of each dates.
