The Present Tense for a Greener Future

Bahasa Inggris SMP Kelas 9 · Bab 4: Describe and Express Actions Clearly

Every little action matters when it comes to protecting our planet — whether it's reusing a bag, turning off unused lights, or walking instead of driving. Let's explore these ideas in the present tense to show how we're making a difference right now.

Knowledge Corner — Present Tense

The present tense is a way to talk about actions or situations happening now, regularly, or facts that are always true. It helps describe habits, routines, current activities, and truths. It has four forms: simple present (routines, habits, schedules, and facts), present continuous (actions happening right now or temporary situations), present perfect (actions completed at some point in the past that are still relevant now, or life experiences), and present perfect continuous (actions that started in the past and continue into the present, often emphasizing the duration). Simple present: (+) S + V1 (s/es) — "He walks to school." (-) S + do/does + not + V1 — "She does not like coffee." (?) Do/Does + S + V1 — "Do you play soccer?" Present continuous: (+) S + am/is/are + V-ing — "I am cooking dinner." (-) S + am/is/are + not + V-ing — "They are not working." (?) Am/Is/Are + S + V-ing — "Is he studying?" Present perfect: (+) S + have/has + V3 — "She has finished her homework." (-) S + have/has + not + V3 — "We have not seen that movie." (?) Have/Has + S + V3 — "Have you visited Paris?" Present perfect continuous: (+) S + have/has + been + V-ing — "I have been reading for an hour." (-) S + have/has + not + been + V-ing — "They have not been practicing." (?) Have/Has + S + been + V-ing — "Have you been waiting long?"

Mission 1. Daily Routine Journal

Write a short paragraph about your daily routine, reflecting on the actions you do from morning to night. Use present tense verbs to describe these activities, as they happen regularly in your life. Include at least 5–7 sentences in your paragraph.

Example paragraph: "I wake up at 6 a.m. every day. I brush my teeth and eat breakfast with my family. Then, I pack my bag and walk to school. During the day, I study in class and talk with my friends during breaks. After school, I come home, do my homework, and play outside. In the evening, I eat dinner, watch TV, and read a book before going to bed at 9 p.m."

The present tense can be written in two forms: active voice and passive voice. The difference lies in the subject of the sentence and its role in the action. Simple present — Active: S + V1 + O ("The chef cooks the meal."); Passive: O + am/is/are + V3 ("The meal is cooked by the chef."). Present continuous — Active: S + am/is/are + V-ing + O ("She is cleaning the house."); Passive: O + am/is/are + being + V3 ("The house is being cleaned by her."). A Conversation About the New Park

Hi, Bara! Have you seen the new park they built near our school?

Yes, I have. It looks great! I heard that the park was designed by a famous architect.

Really? I didn't know that. I saw some workers planting trees there yesterday.

Yeah, and benches are being installed this week.

That's cool! Do you know if they will add a playground for kids?

I think so. A new playground is usually included in public parks.

That's good to hear. Oh, by the way, have you done the homework for science class?

Not yet. The assignments are being prepared by Mr. Smith, so I don't think they're due until next week.

Great! That gives me more time to review the lesson.
